Emerging from jazz legend David Murray’s Black Saint Quartet, Gilchrist has an approach and presence that’s drawn comparisons to royalty such as Andrew Hill and Sun Ra. Of late Gilchrist has returned to his exploration of small group concepts, notably with tonight's acclaimed trio INSIDE OUT featuring Michael Formanek and Eric Kennedy. This trio is the ideal vehicle for Gilchrist’s compositions. He draws on early stride piano forms ,filters them through Monk and Ellington then drops his own DC influences into the mix!
